Virginia Beach Tidbits

Virginia Beach, Virginia has been a historic place for some amazing meetings ever since the first American pioneers arrived on these hallowed shores. In historic Virginia Beach there is the notable Adam Thoroughgood House, the First Landing State Park, and the celebrated lighthouses at Cape Henry.

There are numerous fascinating chapters in Virginia Beach history. There are many different books that cover the events that have shaped this community. John Smith wasn't one of the members of the first landing party in the new world. When an Admiral named Christopher Newport organized the first number of men who were to go ashore, John Smith was in chains and under arrest for his part in mutinous disturbances while en route to the new world.

Many historians believe that the victory over Cornwallis by general George Washington was won strategically in a battle at sea off cape Henry, although there were no major land battles that took place on the land of Virginia Beach. The British controlled all of the waterways of Virginia from the beginning of the war and up until the summer of 1781. However, under the command of an Admiral named De Grasse, the French fleet under defeated the British fleet in a bloody battle that lasted two days at sea off of the coast of Cape Henry. Cornwallis was cut off from needed reinforcements and supplies from England when the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay was no longer controlled by the British. Therefore, the British Army was left in a hostile land and helpless, and, in 1881, was forced to surrender.

The General Assembly determined that a signal on Cape Henry needed be constructed to mark the Chesapeake Bay entrance, as early as 1927. Out of necessity, the earliest colonists had to direct their efforts to ensuring their survival, as opposed to erecting a signal station that was located at Cape Henry but the concept proved only to be a dream. at Cape Henry. It was another century before the recommendation was brought up again.

A resolution was passed by the House of Burgesses in Virginia decreed that it was positively necessary to establish a light at cape Henry in 1727. By this time the importance of a permanent lighthouse to be a guide for ships at night was even more evident as commerce had become a great industry in the Virginia Colony. The colonists intended to use a system of bonfires, which would continue burning because the volunteers would feed the bon fires with pine knots all through the night until the lighthouse could be finished. However, as fast as the colony was growing so was piracy and the pirates took advantage of this system of bonfire. They would build another bon fire, extinguish the original bonfire, and kill the volunteers who were watching the bonfires.

Virginians are fortunate to have historic St. Like's Church in Virginia. It was originally constructed in 1685 and is a beautiful red brick church. St. Luke's church is the oldest English built church in the United States. And offers visitors a beautiful Gothic building with stained glass windows that are much the same as many of the old cathedrals and churches in England. The church also contains oldest wooden organ in the United States, which is no longer played but there is a recording of its last performance in addition to being the oldest English built church in the United States.

The insides of the church were gutted so that the soldiers could keep their horses locked up, which helped to prevent the horses from being stolen during the Civil War. If only the walls of this church could only talk, they would have some very interesting stories. A restoration was begun during the 1950's and the church was restored to its previous full former glory. While the church is only used for special events or services, it can be rented for weddings and is currently fully usable.

When visitors come to the historic St. Luke's Church they should be sure to speak to the sales people in the gift shop. They offer visitors a tour and will tell them all about the church as well as the surrounding region. It is a wonderful church for any engaged couple who are looking for someplace to get married. This church offers the ideal place to get married. The staff as St. Luke's church are remarkably friendly. They will even offer to that the families and friends of the couple on a tour during the night of their wedding rehearsal. The historic St Luke's Church is located about a 45-minute drive from Virginia Beach in Smithfield, and is certainly worth the drive to see this beautiful church.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is a series of tunnels and bridges that stretches some 17.2 miles across the entrance to the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay, which is always busy. In 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel opened which replaced the ferry service that ran between the Eastern Shore and Virginia Beach. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel rapidly quickly became a tourist attraction as well as a critical highway. In 1999, a second set of tunnels and bridges was constructed next to the original.
