Seattle Tidbits

Seattle, Washington is located between the freshwater of lake Washington and the saltwater of Puget Sound on a narrow strip of land, between two rugged mountain ranges, which are the Cascades in the east, and the Olympics in the west. The community was established around water and on hills. It has a very mild marine climate, which encourages abundant natural resources and prolific vegetation.

In 1851,the first pioneers arrived in the Seattle region, and established a location for a settlement that they first named New York. It wasn't long before they relocated the short distance across Elliott Bay to what is currently known as the historic Pioneer Square district, where deep water that was protected was available. The settlement was soon renamed to Seattle, after a Duwamish Indian leader who was known as Sealth and had become friends with the pioneers.

A man named Henry Yesler owned a lumber mill that was located at the foot of Millstreet, and currently known as Yesler Way. In 1853, this lumber mill was the principal economic support for the new settlement. Although the lumber mill supplied the fledgling communities all throughout the Puget mSound area, the majority of the production from the mill went to the booming community of San Francisco. The development of the settlement was interrupted briefly during the winter of 1856, when a brief Indian war broke out. However, the year 1869 brought the incorporation of Seattle by the Territorial legislature, and the population of Seattle was about 2,000 p0eople.

In spite of the fact that coal was discovered close to Lake Washington and the subsequent development of another extractive industry, whose products were also going to San Francisco, the 1870's were relatively quiet. The Northern Pacific Railroad Company announced that its transcontinental railroad terminus would be in Tacoma, during the early 1870's, which was some 40 miles south of Seattle. Shortly after its completion in 1883, Seattle managed to force a connection with Northern Pacific Railroad , in spite of the disappointment of the local leaders. By the late 1880's the population of Seattle exploded. The main industries were coal and lumber. However, the growth of shipping, shipbuilding, wholesale trade, and fishing also contributed to the population growth and economic expansion of the community. At the time, there were some 500 buildings being built, with the majority of them made of wood. In 1889, there was a devastating fire that burnt the building on 116 acres to the ground in the middle of the business district of Seattle, although the explosive growth was slowed but wasn't stopped. Although the damage to property was millions of dollars, nobody was killed in the fire.

Rather than dampening the enthusiasm for Seattle it actually provided the opportunity for major municipal improvements, such as a a professional fire department, municipal water works, regraded and widened streets, and reconstructed wharves. In the business district that was burned, All new construction was required to be of steel or brick, and it was by choice on a more imposing and grander scale.

In spite of the arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in 1893, which was another transcontinental railroad the 1890's weren't so prosperous. A business depression all across this country didn't spare Seattle. However, the discovery of gold close to and next to the Klondike River in Alaska and the Yukon Territory in Canada in 1897, once again made Seattle an immediate booming community. Seattle exploited its already established shipping lines and closeness to the Klondike leading outfitting location for prospectors.

Seattle continued to experience strong growth in the early 1900's, as the result of having discovered the rewards of advertising. Two more transcontinental railroads arrived in Seattle and reinforced the position of Seattle as a shipping and trade center, especially with the North Pacific and with Asia.

The population of Seattle became increasingly diversified. The Japanese operated hotel and truck gardens, African Americans worked as waiters and railroad porters, and the Scandinavians worked in lumbering and fishing. There were significant communities of Filipinos, Jews, Chinese, and Italians. Also during this time period, the International District was established, which was home to many different Asian ethnic groups.

In 1909, Seattle announced its achievements by hosting an international fair, with its population that was nearly 240,000 people. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was celebrating the cultural and economic links that Seattle had forged next to what is currently known as the North Pacific Rim. In 1914, the 42 story L.C. Smith building opened. It was the tallest building in the American West for over 40 years and was a symbol of the metropolitan aspirations and booster spirit of Seattle.

WW I, transformed the shipbuilding industry in Seattle, which produced 20% of the wartime ship tonnage for the country. The war also provided some national attention when, in early 1919, workers struck the shipyards, as the result of wanting to maintain their high wartime wages. This incident soon resulted in the Seattle general strike later that same year, which was the longest such strike in the history of America. The success of the strike fed postwar American fears about socialists and radicals, although the strike didn't have a cogent objective. This general strike helped to establish the reputation of Seattle as being a center of political radicalism in addition to the other ventures of Seattle, such as public electricity and the into municipal transit service.
