Philadelphia TidbitsThe year 1682 is when the history of Philadelphia Pennsylvania starts. The settlement was established by William Penn. King Charles II provided Mr. Penn with a large tract of his recently acquired property holdings in America, in 1681 to repay a debt the king owed to Mr. Penn's father who was Admiral Sir William Penn. This property included what is currently known as Delaware and Pennsylvania, although though the claim as written would create a terrible conflict with the state of Maryland over the land grant issues because the property was already owned by Lord Baltimore. Mr. Penn established a colonial fleet and expedition that intended to sail America in the middle of the later part of the year. Mr. Penn, sailing in the vanguard, first arrived on the soil of America, at the settlement of New Castle, Delaware. As was the orderly change of government that ensued, which was used to the prerogatives and privileges of the aristocracy and which mandated nationalism, the members of the settlement pledged their alliance to Mr. Penn as their new Proprietor. It wasn't long before the first general assembly was held in the settlement.
In 1704, they obtained their objective when the three of the southernmost counties of Pennsylvania were allowed to be divided to become the new semi-autonomous settlement that was located in Lower Delaware River. New Castle, which was the most prosperous and the most prominent, and influential settlement became the capital.
This location was the location of the first and second Continental Congress during the American Revolution. When the American Revolution had ended, the community of Philadelphia was selected the temporary capital of the U.S. between 1790 and 1800.
During the early 1800's, the state and federal governments left Philadelphia. However, Philadelphia continued to be the financial and cultural hub of the nation for many years to come. The large free African American community helped fugitive slaves and established the first independent African American denomination in the country which was known as the African American Methodist Episcopal Church. Philadelphia came to be known as one of the first industrial hubs in the United States with many different industries, the largest of which was textiles. There were several family and economic ties to the South, with southern planters maintaining second homes and having business connections with banks and maintaining second homes in Philadelphia, while sending their daughters to finishing schools in France, that were operated by refugees from Haiti or also known as Saint-Domingue. They were also selling their cotton to textile manufacturers, which then resulted in the selling of these goods to the South. good example might be clothing for slaves. At the start of the American Civil War, there were many southern sympathizers, while the majority of them were residents of the community and became firmly Union supporters while the war continued.
Following the end of the American Civil War, the government of Philadelphia, was controlled by the Republican Party, which, through patronage, established a political machine. By the start of the 1900's, Philadelphia has been described as contended and corrupt. Many different reform efforts gradually changed the government of the community, and in 1950, a new charter for the city weakened the Philadelphia City Council and strengthened the position of mayor. Starting during the Great Depression of the 1930's, the voters increased support for the Democratic party and changed their traditional support for the Republican Party. The Democratic Party of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which has now been predominant in local politics for several decades.
By the end of the 1900's, and the start of the 1900's the population increased dramatically. This was primarily due to the immigration from Asia, Eastern Europe, southern Europe, and Ireland. This also included the migration of Puerto Rican's from the Caribbean and African American from the rural South. All of these people were attracted to the expanding industrial jobs in the community. The Pennsylvania Railroad also employed some 10,000 workers from the South. The United States Navy yard and manufacturing facilities employed numerous of industrial workers next to the rivers.
Philadelphia also became a hub for publishing as well as for finance and publishing, with the help of some major universities. Much of the housing in Philadelphia was substandard and old by the 1950's. After the end of WW II, there was the construction of regional highways and the suburbanization of the community and many families who had a middle-class background met their demand for newer housing by leaving the community for the suburbs. Accompanying the industrial restructuring, the population was decreasing with the loss jobs in the middle 1900's. With the increasing social dislocation and poverty level in Philadelphia Mafia and gang warfare plagued the community during the middle 2000's from the middle 1900's.
By the end of the 1900's and the start of the 2000's, gentrification and revitalization of the historic neighborhoods drew an increase in the population in middle-class people as they started relocating back to the community of Philadelphia. New immigrants from South and Central America as well as Southeast Asia, contributed their energy to the community During the 1990's, and the early 2000's, incentives and promotions have improved the image of Philadelphia and created a condominium boom in Center City and the surrounding regions.
