Oklahoma City Tidbits

Oklahoma City has an intriguing and complicated history. Much of the western regions of Oklahoma were a portion of what was known at the time as the Unassigned lands that included what is currently known as Oklahoma City. These regions started to become settled by a many different white settlers during the late 1800's. These settlers were known as boomers because they did so without receiving permission. Eventually they created sufficient pressure that the United States government decided to hold a series of land runs for the white pioneers to claim the land.

Actually from 1885 through 1889, there were many runs. However, the first run was the most significant. Approximately 50,000 white pioneers gathered at the boundaries to watch or participate in the action. Those who snuck across the boundaries early were known as Sooners.

The region that is currently known as was popular immediately to the white pioneers and approximately 10,000 people claimed land in the area. Although there was a considerable amount of death and fighting, federal officials helped maintain order. However, by 1900, a provisional government was established. The area of Oklahoma City had increased two fold by the same year. A metropolitan community was being established, from those early tent cities, a metropolis was being born.

Somewhat of a short time later, Oklahoma was granted statehood. In 1907, Oklahoma officially became the 46th state in the United States. Based primarily on the hope of striking it rich through oil, Oklahoma grew extensively during its early years.

Guthrie, which is located several miles north of Oklahoma City, was the territorial capital of Oklahoma. However, the population of Oklahoma City had increased to more than 60,000 people by 1910. Many residents believed that the community should be the state's capital. The support was there when a petition was called. Until a permanent capital building was constructed in 1917, serving as a temporary capital building was the Lee-Huckins Hotel.

The many different oilfields in Oklahoma City attracted money as well as new people to the community. The community continued to expand, by adding many different industries, public trolleys as well as areas of commercial activity. Although the region suffered considerably during the Great Depression of the 1930's, much the same as everybody else, many people had already become quite wealthy from the oil boom.

However, during the 1960's, Oklahoma City started declining seriously. The oil had dried up, and many people were relocating to outside of the metropolitan areas to the suburban areas. Until the early 1990's, many different recovery attempts failed for the most part.

In 1992, when the Mayor of Oklahoma City named Ron Norrick proposed the MAPS initiatives numerous residents of Oklahoma City were skeptical. It was almost impossible to imagine the positive results that could come. A sales tax was approved to fund construction and renovation for the community, although there was some resistance. This started the rebirth for Oklahoma City.

Downtown has once again become a highlight community hub. Bricktown features entertainment, restaurants, arts as well as sports. This was popular with both the locals and visitors alike. There was a sense of place in regions that were known as Automobile Alley as well as Deep Deuce, and others.

The year 2000 brought the start of the healing, although the pain will live forever in the hearts of the community. The Oklahoma City National Memorial was constructed on the same ground as where the federal building stood at one time. This Memorial continues to offer peace and solace for every resident and every visitor of Oklahoma City.

History has proven that Oklahoma City is resilient. These days, the community is one of the largest metropolitan area in the plains states.

Some interesting fact about Oklahoma City that include that in 1910, Oklahoma City became the capital of Oklahoma, when a petition gathered sufficient support to relocate it from Guthrie. Originally, the capitol building was supposedly to have a dome. However, the lack of funding prevented it from becoming a reality. It wasn't until 2002 that the dome was added. In 1935, the first parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City. In 1937, the first shopping cart was invented and used in Oklahoma City at Standard Food Markets.

History tells everybody that Oklahoma City has proven to be resilient. These days, the community is one of the largest metropolitan communities in the plains states. From the construction of the skyscraper that houses the Devon Energy Center to the 2008 arrival of the NBA's Thunder franchise, Oklahoma City is alive with development and optimism.

Oklahoma City is a great place to live, work, play, visit and raise a family. The residents of this community are very proud of their heritage and are looking forward to a bright future. There is every reason to believe that Oklahoma City will continue to be prosperous.
