Jacksonville Tidbits

The Timucuan Indian tribe inhabited the location that is currently known as Jacksonville prior to the year 2000 B C., Florida, according to the majority of historians. The first documented European pioneers to the region were some French Huguenots, whose leader was a man named Rene de Laudonniere, who, in 1592, sailed the St. Johns River. It wasn't long before they established a settlement on the river north of what is currently known as the downtown area, that they called Fort Caroline, which, in 1565, that Spanish captured during a bloody massacre. In 1821, the Florida area became a United States territory, after three centuries of battles between Great Britain, France, and Spain.

Also in 1821, a plantation owner from Georgia named Isaiah D. Hart relocated moved to the narrowest location on the St. Johns River that was called Cowford, because a ferry was used to transport cows across the river. In 1822, at this location Mr. Hart laid out his plans for the settlement Jacksonville. General Andrew Jackson, who later became president of the U.S. and was currently the provisional governor of the Territory of Florida is the namesake of Jacksonville. The population of the small settlement was only 100 people, and in 1832 was chartered as a town and the first mayor was elected. Florida was granted statehood in 1845. The year 1859 brought the incorporation of Jacksonville as a city, and had become the major port in Florida that exported both cotton and timber goods.

Between 1861 and 1865, the country was engaged in a Civil War and during that time, Jacksonville wasn't part of the Confederacy. However, both sides fought for the land and the Union Army occupied the community four different times. Wounded soldiers were brought to the churches and homes in Jacksonville, many of which were transformed into military hospitals, after the battle of Olustee, which took place in Jacksonville. Although it was rapidly rebuilt, Union forces destroyed the community.

During the second half of the 1800's, the population of Jacksonville was approximately 7,500 people and was attracting some 75,000 tourists every year. During the 1870's, with the development of its shipping and lumber industries Jacksonville started to prosper and grow and prosper. The beach communities of Jacksonville also prospered and grew when the railroad system arrived, much the same as other east Florida coastal regions. In the late 1800's, a group of businessmen from Jacksonville teamed up and built a railroad system that ended at the beach, just east of Jacksonville. It wasn't long before beach property was being sold and deluxe hotels were constructed, the first direct railroad service between the North and Jacksonville was established in 1888. Also in 1888, an epidemic of yellow fever attacked Jacksonville and killed some 427 people.

The population of Jacksonville had increased to almost 30.000 people by 1900. In 1901, the Great Fire ripped through Jacksonville when some embers from a wood burning stove ignited some materials at the Cleveland Fiber Factory. The fire had cost the city $15 million dollars in property damage, left some 10,000 people homeless, killed seven people, destroyed 146 city blocks, decimated almost 2,400 buildings, destroyed almost 2,400 buildings prior to the fire being put out. Fortunately, once again Jacksonville was rapidly rebuilt and by 1920 the population of Jacksonville had increased again to over 91,000 people.

For the early development of the movie industry, Jacksonville was an important location. In 1908, the first motion picture opened in Jacksonville. The low cost of housing as well as the warm weather year helped with this which continued until the industry relocated to California in the early 1920's.

By 1940, the population of Jacksonville was over 173,000 people. During World War II, two naval air stations and the Mayport Naval Base were established in Jacksonville. During the 1950's, suburban sprawl resulted in a decline in the population of Jacksonville, while the population of the county increased. Duval Country and the city of Jacksonville consolidated in 1968 and the city grew in the rankings of United States cities by size to 22nd from 61st.

From the 1960's through the 1970's, the focus locally was directed toward the development of the port facilities in Jacksonville as well as industrial diversification. The downtown area was transformed by the redevelopment efforts, and new service industries, particularly in insurance and finance boomed as Jacksonville entered the 2000's.

In 1993, when the National Football League awarded Jacksonville a football team franchise, the city expanded into a new direction. The Jacksonville Jaguars regularly attracts thousands of football fans to the downtown area, which adds to the prosperity of the local businesses. In 2005, when Jacksonville hosted Super Bowl XXXIX, this newfound football momentum increased dramatically.

These days, Jacksonville is a wonderful city in which to live, work, play, and raise a family. Jacksonville has a proud and rich history and a bright future.
