Dayton TidbitsDayton, Ohio is the county seat of the County of Montgomery. It is also the 6th largest community in Ohio. A small part of Dayton is located in Greene County. The population of Dayton was some 141759 people according to the 4th largest metropolitan area in Ohio, behind Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. It is the 4th largest metropolitan area in Ohio behind Cincinnati and Cleveland. It is also the 43rd largest metropolitan area in America.
Dayton, Ohio is the location where Wilbur and Orville Wright tried their first experiential flight before they were successful in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903. Dayton is also located on the Great Miami River. Dayton has often been called the Home of Aviation.
In 1796, arriving from Cincinnati, the first pioneers arrived in the Dayton region. They were relocating west to the Great Ohio Valley. To the Native Indian tribes had relocated to the area the Iroquois Native Indian tribe pressured them move farther east to relocate, and the region was then known as the Miami. When the Removal Act of 1830 was passed native Indian tribes had to leave their homes and relocate to Kansas and sometime later to Oklahoma. The year 1805 brought the incorporation of Dayton as a village. The namesake of Dayton was a 26-year-old man who was the youngest man to sign the Unites States constitution named Jonathan Dayton.
Dayton is celebrated on how the community changed the world by the Carillon Historical Park. Dayton is the home the augural football game in the national Football League, the first international acclaim poet who was African American, the self-starter for the automobile, as well as the airplane and so much more. Per capita Dayton had more patients than any other community in America, by the 1900's. Some one-sixth of the corporate executives in the country were employed at one time or another by the internationally known NCR (National Cash Register) Company
Undoubtedly, the remarkable history of Dayton has been a part of numerous people. With extensive educational programming a hand-carved carousel, living history experience, slides, trains, and a 4-D theatre, the Carillon Historical Park offers to bring the history of Dayton in such a way that is fun for the entire family. Originally designed by the famous architects of landscape who designed many different parks in many different communities including New York City's Central Park, the Olmsted Brothers designed the Historical Carillon Park which is located on beautiful 65-acre campus.
The namesake of the park is man named Deeds Carillon. This park features some 51 bells and was designed by the same architectural company that designed Rockefeller Center, named designed by Hofmeister and Reinhard It is largest carillon in Ohio and one of the largest carillons in America.
There are more artifacts on display at the Wright Brothers and John Berry Sr. Aviation Center than any other center in the world. One of the most world-famous is the 1905 Wright Flyer II, from the 1905 era.
For visitors who would enjoy seeing Dayton as it was during the 1950's, they need to visit the Carillon Brewing Company. They can also enjoy the authentically prepared drink and food of the times. It is the only production brewery that is located in a museum.
The Heritage and Entrepreneurship and Manufacturing Center offers visitors the storied structure that Charles Kettering and his Barn Gang designed and constructed the automobile self-starter in the Deeds Barn. There is also an extensive collection of antique NCR cash registers. These innovations changed American transportation as we know it.
From the early days on the industrialization in Ohio, Dayton was heavily involved. Dayton had become the hub for many different kinds of industry by the 1800's. Many journals and newspapers were supporting an ever-increasing publishing industry. These publications dealt with a variety of topics from agriculture interests to religious issues. Some of the later include Ohio Bible Teacher, the Young Catholic Messenger and Christian World. Some of the former examples includes the Ohio Poultry Journal, the Ohio Swine Journal, and the Farmer's Home. For the pioneers from Germany there were also German newspapers. Some of the other industries were agriculture related. Numerous companies produced farm implements. One of the most respected was the Buckeye Mower and Reaper Company.
The Mechanic's Association was the first labor organizations in Ohio. The Association was organized in 1813. During the following 100 years many different labor unions were established in Dayton.
On the National Register on the Country of Montgomery, there are some 150 districts and properties. This includes some seven National Historic Landmarks. The community of Dayton is also the site of some of 107 of these districts and properties that include some five National Historic Landmarks. This includes two properties in Dayton that were listed once, but have since been removed. A single property, the Miami Valley Clubhouse and Golf Course, is divided between other parts of Montogemery County and Dayton. Therefore, it appears on both lists.
