Dallas Tidbits

Although when compared to other communities in this country, Dallas is relatively young but its past is as eventful and colorful as any.

An attorney from Tennessee, who had a taste for adventure, named John Meely Bryan. arrived in the region in 1839. Mr. Bryan was impressed with what he considered to be the ideaL setting for a trading post and eventually a settlement. There was a river, Indian with whom to do business, and plenty of natural land. Mr. Bryan went back to Tennessee to close out his affairs, and, in1841, he returned to Dallas. Mr. Bryan laid claim to 640 acres and designed a settlement with some 20 streets and a courthouse square.

The young settlement gradually grew, albeit with some adversity. During the 1870's, the railroads arrived in the region with the help of some can do spirit. In 1984, Dallas was home to the Republican National convention. The Dallas-Fort Worth Airport was constructed in 1973. In 1936, the Texas Centennial Exposition was held in Dallas. In 1927, the Dallas Love Field Airport opened. In 1915, the Southern Methodist University was completed, and in 1914, the Federal Reserve Bank opened in Dallas.

There have been numerous private enterprise initiatives that have helped put Dallas on the map, for all of these major public endeavors.

Elegant living and fashion were redefined when a man named J. S. Armstrong opened his exclusive Highland Park Shopping Center development just north of the community and a man named Neiman Marcus opened in downtown Dallas.

About 100 miles east of Dallas, a man named C. M. Joiner discovered oil in 1930. With the development of the oil field in East Texas following that discovery of oil, which was the largest petroleum deposit on earth at the time, Dallas became a hub for oil-related activity. The Dallas area's role as the technical and financial for the majority of the drilling industry in Texas has been as good as gold, although Dallas County has never had a working oil well. Other industry and commerce have followed suit, which has added to the progress and success of the community of Dallas.

However, Dallas, much the same as other communities in this country has its share of problem, during the 1960's. The darkest point of history in Dallas was on Nov. 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on a downtown city street. The event cast Dallas in an awful light, and people from all over the world were wondering what kind of place Dallas was.

The residents of Dallas took the assassination hard and the entire period was full of introspection and self-evaluation, although history would show that Dallas itself wasn't to blame. The community of Dallas regained its self-esteem under the leadership of the Mayor named J. Erik Jonsson.

In addition, at that time there was much to be proud of. During the 1960's, Football's Dallas Cowboys started their march to fame, as did entrepreneurs, which included Ross Perot and Mary Kay Ash. Then, Six Flags Over Texas opened in close by Arlington and the Dallas Market Center continued to expand.

However, most importantly, the communities of Fort Worth and Dallas elected to construct an airport in 1965, that would serve the entire area. In 1973, the opening of giant Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened and John Neely Bryan's dream of a major inland port was finally realized.

The Fortune Magazine named the Dallas-Fort Worth area the location of number one business center and the home of many major corporate relocations, Dallas also gained international attention. Dallas is one of the leading convention destinations in this country as the result of the outstanding meeting and convention facilities, numerous varieties of recreational and entertainment opportunities, many different restaurants, and world-class accommodations.

Just as important to this effort was the rejuvenation of downtown Dallas area as a major hub for different pursuits, such as entertainment. In this renaissance period, the upgrading and renovation of the hotels downtown, the West End Historic District, and the Dallas Arts District, are all part of the progress that Dallas has made.

Dallas is continually building on its strengths as the 2000's arrive. These strengths include an outstanding quality of life, excellent access ability, a mild climate, a flair for innovation and style, and friendly people. Both residents and visitors enjoy these exceptional opportunities.

Visitors and their families can discover the vibrant community of Dallas and obtain free entry to many different attractions with a Dallas City Pass. Every pass includes free entry to the intriguing Reunion Tower and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The City Pass is valid for nine days, which allows visitors to explore the city at their convenience. Select to enjoy free admission to either the Presidential Library, the Botanical Garden, or the George W. Bush Presidential Library. Visitors can also choose between complimentary tickets to Sixth Floor Museum in Dealy Plaza, or the Dallas Zoo.

Some visitors might find the Centurion Lounge interesting. This lounge is located at Love Field and is, in fact, one of the best lounges in the country. On the airside of any terminal, use SkyLink to shuttle over to terminal D if you flight isn't yet of terminal D. This is a worthwhile venture for any visitor.
