Buffalo TidbitsBuffalo, New York is situated on the westernmost end of the New York on the narrows of the Niagara River. Buffalo is the county seat of the Country of Erie. Buffalo is the metropolis of a large urban complex that includes the communities of West Seneca, Lancaster, Hamburg, Cheektowaga, Amhurst, North Tonawanda, Tonawanda, Niagara Falls, Lockport, and Lackawanna. The climate is dramatically affected by Lake Erie, resulting in moderate summers as well as winter temperatures and contributes much of the moist temperatures in the wintertime that produce the world famous heavy snowfalls in the wintertime.
Buffalo is located at the natural junction of west/east transportation routes from the Mohawk/Hudson river valleys to the basin of the Great Lakes basin. Jesuit missionaries and French trappers are about the only people that visit the area in the early days. In 1679 a Frenchman named Rene-Robert Cavelier constructed his ship named Griffon on the banks of the Niagara River. the Griffon in 1679. In 1758 a French trading post was established by another Frenchman named Chabert Joncaire. However, in 1759 it was burned to the ground by the British and was abandoned.
In 1780 under the protection of the British the Seneca Indian tribes arrived in the region. Between 1803 and 1804, a man named Joseph Ellicott who worked for the Holland Land Company laid out the new settlement was originally called Amsterdam and had a population of around some 1,500 people at about the same time as the War of 1812. It soon became the ca for the operations on frontier of Niagara. In 1813, once again the British burned to the ground. The year 1816 brought the incorporation of Buffalo as a village. The origin of the name of the of buffalo isn't known. In reference to the local Buffalo Creek, it may have been the French translation of the beautiful river.
In 1818 on the upper Great Lakes, the first steamboat on the upper Great Lakes was constructed. The community experienced and incredible economic boom in 1825 when the Erie Canal was completed. This attracted numerous immigrants and increased boosting its population to some 10,000 people by 1832 when it was incorporated.
In the Civil War in America trade with the expanding Westward grew quickly. The railroads were attracted by trade routes and existing markets, and they converged on Buffalo. Railroad car industries, flour mills, meat packing plants, steel and iron mills, and shipyards were established. The harnessing of the stimulated growth of the highly diversified economy during the 1860's was further stimulated with the development of Niagara waterpower.
In 1881, Grover Cleveland was elected mayor of Buffalo who went on to become president of the United States. Another President was Millard Fillmore. During the Pan American Exposition in 1901. William McKinley, who was then president of the United States, was assassinated. In 1966, after the assassination, the Ansley Wilcox Mansion, which is the location where Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office was dedicated a national historic site. In 1931 the Niagara Square was dominating the McKinley Monument and the location of some federal buildings as well as City Hall, which are focus of Buffalo.
The primary manufacturers in Buffalo include wood products, pharmaceuticals, machine tools, medical supplies plastics, chemicals, and automobile parts, and accessories. However, services, especially those that related to government employment and trade, make up the majority of the economy. Buffalo is a primary railroad hub and highway crossroads as well as a primary port of the St. Lawrence River. It is also the terminus of the Canal System of the state of New York. Buffalo processes a large percentage of trade between Canada and America because it is the primary southern gateway to the Hamilton/Toronto industrial area in Ontario.
In 1927, the international Peace Bridge to Fort Erie, Ontario, was completed and opened as a memorial to represent a century of peaceful relations between Canada and the United States. In 1846, the University at Buffalo, which is also known as the State Unjversity of New York at Buffalo was established and in 1867 Buffalo State College, also known as the State University College at Buffalo was also established. The colleges in Buffalo and the surrounding suburbs include Villa Maria, Trocaire, Daemen, Erie Community, D'Youville, Medaille, and Canisus. Buffalo is also a hub that was established for medical research. Cultural institutions include the Studio Arena, which, in 1965, was established as a professional theatre, Shea's Performing Arts Center, which in 1926 was a renovated theatre, Kleinhans Music Hall which is the home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Albright/Knox Art Gallery as well as the Erie County and Buffalo Historical Society, and the Buffalo Museum of Science.
The First Niagara Center houses the professional ice hockey team, named the Sabres. The Ralph Wilson Stadium houses a professional grid iron football team named the Buffalo Bills. This community is the way to many different tourist attractions and recreational areas. These include the Niagara Falls, and several ski areas and state parks, which are located close to Buffalo that include the Fort Niagara State Park, which is located at the mouth of the Niagara River.
