Salt Lake TidbitsA man named Brigham, Young, along with some other Mormons were attempting to escape religious persecution in the Midwestern and the Eastern U. U. arrived in and established Salt Lake City, Utah. Mr. Young and his followers traveled on what is now known as the Mormon Trail. In 1847, on the first day that they arrived they started tilling the soil. Oregon Trail, the followers of Mr. Young started tilling the land on the first day of their arrival in July 1847.
This region that was originally known as the Great Salt Lake City, had been formally inhabited by nomadic Indian tribes con were comprised of oh the Shoshone, Paiute Ute and Pueblo tribes. These days, the community is working hard to diversify its base of economics having experienced the harsh effects of its mining history, by developing one of the greatest concentrations of computer high technology, and biomedical, high technology, and computer software companies in the country.
Between One 1,300 A.D. the Anasazi tribe wandered around the land of the Great Basin Desert that included The majority of Utah, Parts of northwestern New Mexico, northwestern Arizona, and southwestern Colorado. Sometime later, followed the Ute and the Navajo, in addition to and other tribes.
In 1776, Spanish explorers were the first Europeans to enter the region, and in 1841, the first American storyteller and mountain was named Jim Bridger arrived in the region. Mr. Bridger would come to know many early figures in the history of America, such as Young Kit Carson, John Fremont, and John Sutter, who came to be famous from his association with the California Gold Rush.

The word Great was dropped from Great Salt Lake City in 1868. Also that same year, Mr. Young established ZCMI (Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution), which was the first department store in the country, in order to encourage church members to do business with other members, rather than with former member or non-member merchants.
There was also another great influence on the increase in activity, prosperity, and population in the area, when the Golden Spike was driven at Promontory Point, which linked the western territories with the east by the First Transcontinental Railroad. With the railroad came a numerous different mining operations, that were all looking to find precious metals such as lead, gold, silver, and copper.
As the result of the Mormon's belief on polygamy, they were denied admittance to statehood during the 46-year campaign that was requesting statehood. In 1860, the practice of polygamy had been outlawed but continued and is still practiced today. In 1869, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the anti-polygamy to be constitutional, in an effort to add resolve to its stance on the matter.
In 1890, the issue was finally resolved when the president of the Mormon Church named President Wilford Woodruff declared the practice outlawed and claimed that God told him that his people must give up this part of their lifestyle. In 1896, by decree of President Grover Cleveland Utah was admitted to the Union as the 45th state.
From 1900 through 1930, the population of Salt Lake City tripled, due to things such as copper mining at the Canyon Copper Mine, in 1905, and oil that was discovered and produced in 1907, in the Virgin River area. Other improvements helped as well, including the sewer system as well as the trolley systems that were introduced into the community during the early 1900's.
Much the same as other communities on the nation, Salt Lake City suffered during the Great Depression if the 1930's. Recovery come until the onset of WW II, which increased the requirement of raw material by the military.
