San Jose Tidbits

In 1949, the history of San Josi started after the centennial celebration of statehood as well as the California Gold Rush. Originally, known as the Historical Museum of San Josi and managed by the City of San Josi, the history San Josi was incorporated in 1998 using its current name as an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. During the next several decades, the History San Josi has grown to include three locations, which include the Collection Center/Research Library and Archives, which houses the largest collection of regional artifacts in the state of California, the Peralta Adobe Fallon House Historic Site, and the History Park. More than 120,000 visitors attend events and exhibits at these locations every year.

History Park is located in Kelley Park, and is a 14-acre town-like assembly of some 32 original and reconstructed landmarks, businesses, and homes that highlight the history and culture of the Santa Clara Valley as well as the history of San Josi. History Park is also home of 9 community partner organizations who each provide programming and exhibits that showcase their contributions and constituencies to the Valley.

Located in the historic San Pedro Square, is the Peralta Adobe Fallon House Historic Site. The 1855 Victorian Fallon House features 15 furnished period rooms. Constructed in 1797 and across the street, the Peralta Adobe, is the oldest surviving address in San Josi, and is the only building remaining from the El Pueblo de San Josi de Guadeloupe. Every November, History San Josi provides Founders Day programs that celebrate the Pueblos establishing pioneers from the native Ohlone people and the De Anza Trail expedition. The programs recreate the stories, art, dance, music, celebrations, and lives of this period in an interactive way that engages the entire family.

One of the largest collections of regional artifacts in the state of California is manager by the History San Josi. Housed in a state of the art facility close to History Park, known as the Collection Center, the artifact collection includes objects that represent the past of the Valley from Native Indian agricultural equipment to Native Indian tools and baskets to pre-silicon chip technologies that were pioneered locally. The Museum continues to collect contemporary history documenting the political and social happenings in the Valley. The research collection includes published works, oral histories, films, maps, manuscripts, personal papers, and photographs. Volunteers and staff provide access for, catalog, and care for the historical records for Santa Clara County as well as the City of San Josi. Community members, such as historians, educators, and students who are seeking primary sources make use of Historic San Joses Research Library and Archives by meeting with staff to receive assistance with the identification of relevant materials and to discuss their research project. Researchers from a minimum of 28 countries, America, as well as throughout the state use the Research Library and Archives, to further promote the importance of the Santa Clara Valley and the City of San Josi.

Historic San Jose engages the community by offering low cost and free family festivals that include the Heritage Holiday celebration in addition to the Antique Autos, as well cultural festivals such as Kwanzaa and El Dia de Portugal. Historic San Jose is very proud of its school programs that are based on standards that have provided hands on, award winning educational opportunities for over two decades. Students visit historical exhibits and buildings, as well as participate in hands on activities that meet the Language Arts Content Standards and History Social Science Standards for Public Schools in California. These programs take place at both the Peralta Adobe Fallon House Historic Site as well as in History Park. More than 25,000 teachers and students from over 200 schools, take part in these educational programs every year. In order to present online cell phone audio tours and exhibits that offer another way to access the stories and collection of the valley, History San Josi has also formed partnerships with local businesses. Every year, there are more than 400,000 people who use these services.

Volunteers secured the property in order to create Kelley Park. They also started the San Josi Historical Museum, and continue to be the backbone of History San Josi. The San Josi Historical Museum Association, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established in order to raise funds to support Museum projects in 1971. During years of reduced staffing and funding, the Museum depended very on volunteers. Between 1995 and 2000, volunteers were absolutely necessary in the persevering and planning through the transition to the nonprofit managed History San Jose, from the City operated San Josi Historical Museum. Every year about 20,000 of volunteer hours are contributed to History San Josi.

The Museum has been fortunate to have the talents of political activists, community leaders, reporters, history enthusiasts, historians, engineers, architects, and artists who donate their expertise and time to the Museum. History San Josi wishes to thank all those who have contributed.
