San Francisco Tidbits
In 1542, the exploration and European discovery of the San Francisco Bay Area and its islands started and culminated in 1775, with the mapping of the bay. Early visitors to the Bay Area were preceded by between 10,000 and 20,000 years earlier. However, they were the native Indian tribes that were indigenous to the region. Before the arrival of the Portuguese and Spanish explorers, more than 10,000 indigenous native Indians known as the Ohlone tribe were living in the coastal area between the San Francisco Bay and Point Sur.
The coastal region that stretched between Monterey Bay and San Francisco was home to about 40 culturally diverse native tribes that are currently collectively known as the Ohlone. Theirs was a mobile society of hunter-gatherers in an area where there was an abundance of fish, native plants, game, shellfish, and waterfowl, which provided sustenance for their flourishing villages. For the neighboring San Francisco Bay Area people, as well as for the Ohlone people, the 1776 establishment of Mission Delores in San Francisco hastened the end of the pre-European, traditional ways.
With his crew in tow, a Captain named Drake midway through their practical circumnavigation of the world, sailed their Golden Hind into the foggy North Pacific cove that was surrounded by buff cliff that reminded him and his crew of the White Cliffs of Dover in 1579. They remained at the location that they named Nova Albion for five weeks, supplying and repairing the ship, while getting along great with the native Indians.
In 1776, the first colonizing party arrived to establish the Presidio of San Francisco and Mission Dolores. The Mission Dolores is designated as Registered Landmark Number One of the County and the City of San Francisco. The oldest church in San Francisco is the Mission Church, and is also one of the oldest Mission Churches in the state of California. In 1776, the first mass celebrated at the Mission was held, five days prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Mission Dolores was the sixth of 21 missions established by the Franciscans.
During the early 1800s, ships from Boston started arriving in the Spanish missions and settlements next to the lower and upper coast of California. They first arrived to trade for both beaver and otter pelts, and the sometime later for hides, tallow as well as the materials used by the pioneers and native Indians. During the 1820s, hunters and trappers from America started drifting into the California from the East. Although, later they were welcomed, these early settlers of the West were sometimes treated harshly by the earlier Spanish governors. However, they had to submit to surveillance and show their passports. Sometime later, some of the new arrivals took up large grants of land after marrying their daughters to some wealthy Mexican ranchers.
A very tired group of approximately 220 Latter day Saints passed through the rocky portals of the Golden Gate in 1846, in anticipation of the difficult end six-month voyage that took them around the southernmost tip of South America. In 1848, gold was gold was discovered at Coloma in a sawmill.
Later that same year, they were passing through the golden gate, and entering the bay of San Francisco. An old fort was discovered on one of the high hills that bounded their view on the right, which was almost level with the ground, and on the left the land rose more gradually, which lifted up into mountains in the distance. This land stretched to where the peaks of the Sierra Nevadas could just be seen with their snowy caps all along the horizon. There were numerous Pelicans just past Bird island. There was also a great fleet of deserted vessels that were lying before the city that covered the hills close to the beach. There were numerous canvas houses and tents, as well as some substantial buildings, which was known as the community of San Francisco. As soon as they anchored, they were surrounded by boats ready to take us ashore, and to bring friend and relatives to some, which was news to all. It was believed that money must be plentiful since the boatmen charged them me a dollar and a half for setting these people ashore.
In order to satisfy a judgement, the preserved heads of Three-Fingered-Jack and Joaquin Murieta were sold at auction for $36 in 1855. After cleaning up the crime by the 1856 Committee of Vigilance, stimulating improvement in prospects and business arrived that same year, and the County and City and County of San Francisco was established and a new county that came to be known as San Mateo was created out of the remainder of the old County of San Francisco.
In 1856, San Francisco was a strange community that had a population of some 30,000 people, with a rapid transition to a community of stone and brick buildings from one of shacks and tents.
