This was the first settlement in what is currently known as the city of Denver. However, by the summer of 1859, the settlement faded rapidly, and was abandoned in favor of St. Charles City.

A land speculator from eastern Kansas named General William Larimer staked a claim on a hill that overlooked the confluence of the South Platte River and across the creek from the existing mining settlement of Auraria by placing cottonwood logs on it in 1858.
