One of the most important industries in San Antonio is tourism. Of the many attractions in San Antonio that include sports, attracts numerous visitors each year. Sea World in San Antonio is the world's largest marine-life theme park. HemisFair 1968 left a number of permanent buildings, that include the Tower of the Americas, which has a restaurant and an observation deck on top. In 1924, the San Antonio Conservation Society was established and was instrumental in saving the beautiful San Antonio River from being paved over for a drain, and winds through downtown. The society has since become a powerful and popular organization that is devoted to preserving the unique features of the community. Recognizing the impact and value of the cultural locations within the community upon the stability and economy of San Antonio, which has passed a model comprehensive historic preservation code that provides tax incentives to encourage rehabilitation and preservation, and maintains a Historic Preservation office as part of planning. Some outstanding examples of neighborhood restoration efforts, include the Monte Vista and King William historic districts.

In sports, the Alamodome hosts major college basketball and football, as well as the SBC Center is the home venue for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association, (NBA), and the newest franchise in San Antonio, in addition to the Silver Stars of the Women's Basketball Association (WNBA). Some of the other professional sports teams include the National Hockey League (NHL) team, the San Antonio Missions baseball team, the San Antonio Iguanas, and the San Antonio Racquets.

It wasn't until 1940, that San Antonio expanded beyond its original Spanish charter land. The land was sufficiently large to permit numerous incorporated suburbs within the metropolitan region. However, the community soon went beyond these. Like most 1900's communities in America during the age of the automobile, its expansion was primarily horizontal that had ever expanding neighborhoods but without much vertical building. Although, in the early 1900's, several tall buildings were constructed in San Antonio as well as the first Texas skyscraper, vertical construction didn't continue, and the center of the population of the community steadily relocated northward. By 1930, San Antonio had fallen behind Dallas and Houston in population but remained the third largest city in Texas. The population of San Antonio increased by 61%, after a period of slow growth during the 1930s, and by 1950 the population had increased to 406,442 people.

Currently the city council consists of ten members being elected by districts and eleven elected members, with the mayor being elected at large. City council members may serve two terms and are elected for two-year terms. The city council sets the policies for the community and hires a city manager to serve as the chief administrative officer of the community. San Antonio has 15 AM, 19 FM radio, and nine television stations that broadcast locally. The San Antonio Express-News is the newspaper of the community, and there are 33 other monthly and weekly publications, that include 11 military publications.
