Denver, Colorado was established in 1858 in the Kansas Territory during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. A group of prospectors for gold from Lawrence, Kansas came to and founded Montana City that summer, which was located along the banks of the South Platte River. This was the first settlement in what is currently known as the city of Denver. However, by the summer of 1859, the settlement faded rapidly, and was abandoned in favor of St. Charles City.
A land speculator from eastern Kansas named General William Larimer staked a claim on a hill that overlooked the confluence of the South Platte River and across the creek from the existing mining settlement of Auraria by placing cottonwood logs on it in 1858. In order to gain the favor of the Kansas Territorial Governor, named James W. Denver, General Larimer named the settlement Denver City, and was hoping that the name of the settlement, which would assist in making it the county seat of Arapaho County. However, it was ironic that Governor Denver had resigned from his office. The site was located just across from the South Platte River from the location of the encampments of that particular season of the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indians, which was accessible to trails that already existed.
Along with some associates from the St. Charles City Land Company, General Larimer in the settlement to miners and merchants, with the intention of creating a major community that would cater to new emigrants. As a frontier settlement, Denver City had an economy that was based on helping the local miners with the trading of goods, livestock, saloons, and gambling. Parcels of land were frequently gambled away or traded for grubstakes by the miners in Auraria, during the early years.
On February 28, 1861, the Colorado Territory was established and on November 7, 1861, Arapahoe County was established. Also the year 1861 brought the incorporation of Denver as a city. From 1861, until consolidation in 1902, Denver City served as the county seat of Arapahoe County Seat, and then Denver City became the Capital of the Territory in 1865. Denver City shortened its name to simply Denver as the result of its newly discovered importance. When Colorado was admitted into the Union in 1875, Denver became the State Capital.
From 1880 through 1895 the city of Denver experienced a huge increase in the corruption of the city, when as crime bosses, that included men that included men such as Soapy Smith, worked alongside the police and elected officials to control the bunko gangs, gambling, and elections. Local religious leaders coordinated various charities and raised funding to help the poor in Denver, as the precursor to the international charity United Way, which was established in 1887.
Denver hosted the Democratic National Convention in 1908, to promote the status of the city on the national socioeconomic and political arena. Sometime later, Denver was also chosen to host the 1976 Winter Olympics, which coincided with the centennial celebration for Colorado. However, Colorado voters voted against the ballot initiatives that allocated public funds to pay for the high costs of the games. As the result, the games were relocated to Innsbruck, Austria. Future bids will be difficult as the notoriety of becoming the only city ever to decline to host an Olympiad after being chosen.
Historically, Denver has also been known as the Queen City of the Plains as the result of its important role in the agricultural industry of the plains areas next to the foothills of the Colorado Front Range. In honor of this city, many different United States Navy ships have been named the USS Denver.
Denver is a prime example of urban sprawl with Lafayette, Loveland, Lakewood, and Boulder all within close proximity of the downtown area. Originally, each of these neighboring communities was established to provide housing for those who wanted to escape from the city, in addition to finding less expensive industrial and commercial space for businesses. However, nonetheless, unchecked expansion has enveloped them.
In 1977, the Colorado History Museum was constructed, which is one of the places of historic interest. The museum preserves a collection of prehistoric and historic documents and artifacts and is the headquarters for the Colorado Historical Society.
