Bringing Together Mitel & Microsoft Teams

By Chris Mitchell, Chief Technology Officer

The conversations around the adoption of Microsoft Teams and more importantly Microsoft Teams and Mitel have grown from “something to roadmap” to “we need to get working on this today”. We have been having more detailed conversations the last month than at any previous time thanks in large part to organizations gravitating towards Teams as their platform of choice.

Making sure that everybody plays nice with the solutions we believe in is what we do all day every day! Mitel MiVoice and Teams can be a powerful combination for your business and we put together some options for you to integrate them together.

Using Teams and Your On-Prem ShoreTel/Mitel MiVoice System

So you’re happy using Microsoft Teams for meetings, messaging, and collaboration, but have your on-prem ShoreTel / Mitel MiVoice Connect you’d like to leverage along with it. What is the best way to go about this?

Unfortunately, Call2Teams doesn’t support MiVoice Connect yet – if it did you would be able to register your Teams client as a 3rd party SIP endpoint to your MiVoice Connect system.

End of story? No! We always go deeper with our knowledge base until we find a solution for you! The good news is no additional Office 365 Licensing is needed. You can create Microsoft Direct Routing to create a tie-line between your PBX and Microsoft Teams. This enables the following:

  • Extension to extension dialing between Teams devices and your MiVoice system
  • Avoid adding a Microsoft Calling Plan to have your MiVoice system to provide dial tone to Teams meetings and Teams extensions (e.g. a Polycom endpoint registered to Teams)

Other Considerations Integrating Mitel MiVoice And Microsoft Teams

There is some MiVoice infrastructure required such as SIP trunk licensing to communicate between MiVoice and the Direct Routing SBC. It is important to note the quantity here will be based upon the number of concurrent calls between the systems.

While we work hard to find the BEST solution, workarounds do have some drawbacks to consider:

  • No presence or directory syncing between your MiVoice system and Teams
  • Two separate systems to manage
  • Two clients for your end-users
  • Teams for messaging and meetings
    • MiVoice Connect client for call control, voicemail, etc.
